So i got photoshop and im considering starting to draw pixel art again? I quit because I was using gimp and it was just so frustrating I started to hate drawing. If people wanna suggest small one subject ideas to draw im gonna learn about how to use photoshop tonight.
Here’s a floppy eyeball monster—one of my enemy types for the upcoming Dream Arcade show at Light Grey Art Lab. I’m learning so much about pixel art and animation! I’m sure I’ll tweak this in a half-dozen ways before I’m done (starting with raising the contrast on those highlights).
I’ve also been posting some really rough Dream Arcade progress pics & gifs to my sketch/wip/everyday blog.
I think the biggest challenge in making an animated pixel art movie or show is how underdeveloped pixel art as a medium is.
Pixel art is only a few decades old, and it was all but completely abandoned by most of the game industry 20 years ago. And the vast majority of pixel art out there is for video games.
Animation also used to be a daunting and challenging practice. But after over a century of animators and producers perfecting it, developing techniques of animation and production to make it easier, look better and be quicker and cheaper to produce, it became an established medium.
Pixel art animation just needs to be developed more as a medium.
Not to mention the development of new technology, tools, hardware and software made traditional and digital animation much easier to produce.
There’re a few techniques and softwares out there to make pixel art quicker and better, but we need a lot more.
My first animated pixel art background. Just learned how to “paint” pixel art style (it’s not TRUE PIXEL ART tho), and how to animate it. I think about creating my own adventure game. It would look like this. This one inspired by Deus Ex.

It is a bit more tricky than it seems, isn’t it? Especially with animation. One tends to think that pixel art is an easy art form, as thoses cute li'l squares look harmless and good-natured. When they are nothing but uncivilized tiny cubes of frustration and mischief. But they are worth it. Hang in there!
